dharma + family - Public Talk and Interactive Evening with Tergar Facilitator Justin Kelley

The Buddha was a son, a husband, and a father.

These roles are often seen as hindrances to the Buddha’s awakening, leading to a distinct interpretation of the dharma, especially in our contemporary world. What would happen, however, if we saw these identities as aids on the path toward the Buddha’s awakening?

In this experiential and interactive evening, we will explore this topic—how family life and our contemplative practice can work together to support each other. Specifically, we will consider how changing dirty diapers, washing the dishes, or having a difficult conversations with loved ones can become mediums for our spiritual practice.

The evening will include short presentations of traditional Buddhist materials related to the life of the Buddha, experiential and interactive exercises aimed at more fully understanding our experience as family members and contemplative practitioners, and contemplative exercises that will help support this exploration.

This program is open to everyone.

About the Facilitator: Justin Kelley spent ten years living in India and Nepal, studying the Tibetan language, Hindu and Buddhist philosophical systems, and various meditative approaches. He first became a student of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche in 2007 and has practiced under his guidance ever since. In 2015 he became a PhD student at Rice University in the Department of Religion, where he specializes in Indian and Himalayan Buddhism with Dr. Anne C. Klein. His research focuses on the psychophysical transformation that occurs within religious practice, and the ways in which these practices influence our understandings of identity and the world we live in. He is a father and a husband.
